mercy as infinite as You…
I’m not a fan of surface level worship. I connect more with worship songs that have some depth to them and are artistically and strategically constructed. Off the top of my head the first song that comes to mind that does just this is How He Lovesby John Mark McMillan. That song wasn’t even written to be a worship song but became one because, I believe, its message was constructed in such a way that people connected with it on a much deeper level. The first and second verses are BEAUTIFULLY written
… He is jealous for me, loves like a hurricane I am a tree, bending beneath the weight of His wind and mercy…
… We are His portion and He is our prize, drawn to redemption by the grace in His eyes. If grace is an ocean we’re all sinking…
That’s artistry in worship at its best! Another song that I think of is Second Chance byRend Collective Experiment. Their second album just came out called Homemade Worship by Handmade People. This album is BRILLIANT! It’s like taking Gungor and Mumford & Sons and mashing them together (I HIGHLY recommend jumping on itunes for it). My favorite verses in Second Chance are
… When sin and ugliness collide with redemption’s kiss beauty awakens by romance. Always inside this mess I have found forgiveness, mercy as infinite as You…
… Fragments of brokenness salvaged by the art of grace. You craft life from our mistakes. Black skies of my regrets outshone by this kindness. New life dawns over my soul…
Seriously, that’s just sick. I LOVE singing those words out loud in worship to my Father. They just make my soul dance for Him…
I’m happy to say that more in-depth worship music like this is surfacing all over. Artists are starting to take bold creative steps in exploring the beauty of the Lord even farther. I really believe that as worship leaders, songwriters, and receivers of that worship we are just now scratching the surface of what true worship is. I feel we are really starting to discover who we are in Jesus and are beginning to step out of the comfort worship patterns and really hear the groaning of the Earth.
I love it.
